What is VEVO?

Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) is a system that allows visa holders to check their visa details and conditions online.

VEVO can only provide information about people who have their details available in our systems. You may not have a searchable record if you migrated to Australia before 1990 and have not since traveled out of Australia. You may then need to apply for an electronic visa record. Some people may have an ImmiCard issued by us. Government agencies can then use the ImmiCard to check their commencement of identity in Australia.

Your Visa Grant Number is a unique 13-digit number that identifies your Australian visa. It is assigned to you when your visa is approved.

Your Transaction Reference Number (TRN) is a unique number assigned to you at the time of submitting your visa application. It is used to track and manage your application as it progresses through the visa processing system.

You can find your Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number (TRN) on any documentation or correspondence you receive from the Australian Department of Home Affairs about your visa, such as:

  • Your visa grant letter
  • Your visa label (if you have one)
  • Your VEVO account

You may need your Visa Grant Number or TRN for a variety of purposes, such as:

  • When checking your visa status online
  • When booking flights or travel insurance
  • When applying for a job or school in Australia
  • When renewing your visa

If you cannot find your visa grant number, you can contact the Department of Home Affairs for assistance.

  • a transaction reference number (TRN)
  • a visa grant number

Visa grant number

You will find your visa grant number on your visa grant notification letter which you may have received by email.

Important: The visa grant number in your grant notification may relate to a visa that is not ‘in-effect’. You will only be able to access your visa details when you use the grant number of your current visa.

If you no longer have your grant number you can request a VEVO reference number using the VEVO Request for Reference Number Form.

Why do I get an error message when I use VEVO?

There are a few reasons why you might get an error message when you use VEVO:

  • Your visa is not “in-effect.” This means that your visa has expired or has been canceled. You need to use the reference number of your current visa.
  • Your visa has expired. You need to renew your visa before you can use VEVO to check your details.
  • You arrived in Australia before 1990. The Australian government did not start keeping electronic records until 1990. If you arrived in Australia before then, you need to contact the Department of Home Affairs to ask them to create an electronic visa record for you.
  • You have a new travel document. It may take some time for the Department of Home Affairs to update your details in their system. If you have recently received a new travel document, such as a passport or ImmiCard, you may need to wait a few days before you can use VEVO.
  • The Department of Home Affairs’ systems have conflicting information about you. For example, you may have different dates of birth listed in different systems. If this happens, you need to contact the Department of Home Affairs to have the information corrected.
